In a growing and diverse area like the Catawba Region, transportation solutions are a vital necessity to the continued growth and vitality of the region. The region’s proximity to Charlotte, North Carolina via Interstate I-77, combined with the transection of counties within the region by several critical U.S. and South Carolina highways, make proper transportation planning all the more important to the region’s healthy growth.
Through our extensive expertise in transportation planning, Catawba Regional Council of Governments (CRCOG) has assisted the region’s communities in securing funding for the expansion and rehabilitation of numerous vital transportation corridors. In addition, services such as transportation corridor planning, long range transportation plan development, and our long-standing cooperative relationship with South Carolina Department of Transportation, have all helped to ensure that funds are being spent prudently on behalf of the Catawba Region.
CRCOG Role in Regional Transportation Planning A successful planning partnership with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has enabled CRCOG to take a more active role in regional transportation issues. CRCOG assists SCDOT in the long-range planning of regional transportation improvements including highway infrastructure, public transit, planning studies, and other needs as appropriate. CRCOG works with jurisdictions in the region to prioritize local needs and make recommendations to SCDOT for funding of highway and transit projects, within the rural portion of the region.
CRCOG maintains a regional Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) with representatives from local government, transportation providers, and special interest groups. The TAC meets quarterly to evaluate potential transportation projects and make recommendations to the CRCOG Board of Directors for funding and implementation.

CRCOG Role in Regional Transit Planning
The Catawba Regional Council of Governments (CRCOG) serves as the regional transportation planning and coordination agency for the rural areas of Chester, Lancaster, Union, and York Counties. Working in partnership with SCDOT, local governments, transit providers, and human service agencies, CRCOG identifies regional transit needs, develops transportation plans, administers and prioritizes applications for federal transit programs such as FTA Sections 5310 and 5311, and coordinates with mobility services for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and other transit-dependent populations. Through its Rural Planning Work Program, CRCOG conducts transportation studies, supports project development and funding efforts, facilitates public involvement, and helps ensure that local and regional transportation priorities are reflected in state and federal planning processes.
